It’s been two years since I’ve tested a BMW 5 series…and man is this refreshing to see this #luxury #sedan get the proper power plant over the #530i base four cyclinder.
The BMW 550e xDrive is the plug-in hybrid performance variant of the latest 5 Series, combining a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission. Together, the system produces about 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, enabling strong acceleration—roughly 0–60 mph in around 4.3 seconds. Power is sent through BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system for improved traction and stability.
The 550e features a relatively large battery for a PHEV, at approximately 19.4 kWh usable capacity, delivering an estimated electric-only range of around 35–40 miles depending on conditions. In electric mode, it can reach highway speeds, making it practical for daily commuting without using gasoline. Charging can be done via Level 2 AC charging, typically taking a few hours for a full recharge.
Fuel economy benefits from the hybrid system, offering significantly improved efficiency compared to traditional six-cylinder models, especially in mixed driving. The sedan also maintains the 5 Series’ focus on comfort and technology, with adaptive suspension, advanced driver assistance systems, and BMW’s latest curved display running iDrive. Overall, the 550e blends strong performance with meaningful electrification, positioning it between efficiency-focused PHEVs and full M performance models.
