A serious injury crash involving an electric bike highlights the importance of wearing a helmet.
Just after 8 a.m. Monday, May 5, Estacada Fire was dispatched to reports of an electric bike accident a few blocks from the station in Downtown Estacada. The operator of the bike was cruising down Fourth Avenue when they lost control and crashed. Because the victim was not wearing a helmet, serious head injuries occurred.
Firefighters and responding paramedics stabilized the victim as a Life Flight helicopter was called to take them to OHSU for trauma treatment. No further details on the victim or their status have been shared.
Estacada Fire reminds all electric bike users that even short trips can be dangerous if the vehicle is improperly used. The bikes can reach speeds over 20 miles per hour, and 40% of reported injuries involve head trauma. Wearing a helmet reduces brain injury risk by 88%.
