A 12-year-old boy riding on an e-bike suffered life-threatening injuries after colliding with a Tesla Saturday evening in Carmel Valley, San Diego police said.

The boy was riding westbound in the bike lane of Del Mar Heights Road around 5:40 p.m. while a 64-year-old man was driving a Tesla Model Y in the left lane.

The rider tried to make a left turn from the bike lane onto Old Carmel Valley Road and was struck by the front passenger side of the vehicle, police said. The driver stopped and remained at the crash site, police said.

The boy underwent surgery for multiple brain bleeds and a broken collarbone. Police did not have an update on his status as of Sunday morning.
