MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — None were injured following an e-bike battery explosion on Mackinac Island, according to the Mackinac Island Fire Department (MIFD).
Smoke and flames were reported as coming from a building on Cadotte near 2nd Street around 7:37 a.m. on Monday, April 27, according to MIFD Chief Jason St. Onge.
Firefighters extinguished the fire at the scene while throwing a burning e-bike battery out the window. St. Onge said the battery was inside an “explosion proof bag,” which was blown apart in the explosion. He notes that electricity in the building was already off and the batter wasn’t charging.
St. Onge said this is the 10th known e-bike fire on Mackinac Island as well as the most recent fire following the fatal explosion in Kingsford. The fire chief reminds all e-bike owners not to keep the bike indoors.
