Police cracking down on unlicensed teen motorized bike & scooter drivers

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — A local police department is putting out a warning about unlicensed drivers hitting the road.

Carl Junction police are seeing an uptick in adolescents driving things like E-bikes and electric motorcycles. And they say, in most cases, that youngster still needs a driver’s license to drive on the road.

That includes electric motorcycles capable of speeds higher than 30 mph, motorized bicycles and motorized scooters. E-bikes don’t require a license, but the driver must be at least 16-years-old for a class 3 E-bike.

“Problem is, when you don’t have the driver’s license, you don’t have the education. We get complaints from parents, or motorists, that these kids, they ride in the street. They don’t move out of the way for cars. They run stop signs. Some of them are driving way too fast,” said CJPD Sgt. Doug Dickey.

This isn’t just a rule in Carl Junction – it’s state law in Missouri.
