E-bikes continue to grow in popularity across New Jersey, making it easier and quicker for bikers to get around town. Hoboken Police continue to enforce e-bike laws throughout the City, reporting more than 180 e–bike tickets were issued in the first quarter of 2026. This comes ahead of strict new laws taking effect this summer, aiming to make roads and riders safer when it comes to using e-bikes. Read on to learn about the e-bike traffic enforcement from Hoboken Police.

E-Bike Tickets in 2026

In a post on Friday, April 10th on Facebook, Hoboken Police shared that officers issued 182 e-bike tickets in the first three months of 2026. Those violations included riding on sidewalks, ignoring signals, skipping stops, and not wearing safety vests.

The Hoboken Girl reached out to Hoboken City Hall to learn more about the tickets given out from January to March 2026. Marilyn Baer, Communications Manager for City Hall, says there was no specific step-up in enforcement, just police doing routine traffic enforcement.

“Officers regularly address violations such as riding on sidewalks and failure to observe traffic signals, as part of daily responsibilities to keep Hoboken safe,” Marilyn told HG. “Summonses for e-bike violations have increased, as their popularity and usage has increased over the years.”

Hoboken is viewed as one of the more bike-friendly cities in the area because of its many protected bike lanes. In November 2025, a protected bike lane was opened as part of the Grand Street Complete Streets Pilot Program, which is part of the City’s Vision Zero Initiative.  Hoboken has been viewed as a leader in bike safety and is referenced by other localities as they develop similar efforts.

New Statewide E-Bike Laws

Restrictions around e-bikes are changing come this summer. Starting July 19th, a new statewide law takes effect, treating e-bikes as motorized vehicles.

The law mandates all e-bike operators to register their bikes with the Motor Vehicle Commission, carry insurance, and hold a valid driver’s or moped license. E-bike riders must be at least 15 years old, and helmets are mandatory for all ages. The first year of registration is free. There are $50 fines for violations of these laws.

Marilyn says the City and Hoboken Police are reviewing the new legislation and will make adjustments accordingly.

E-Bike By The Numbers

E-bike usage continues to trend upwards. Citi Bike, the public bike-sharing system, reported over 1 million rides were taken across the Hoboken + Jersey City area in 2024. Out of those million rides, over 600,000 were on e-bikes. When it comes to tracking e-bike violations,  Hoboken Police doesn’t report whether the bike is part of a bike-share program or privately owned.

These e-bike violations don’t compare to vehicle violations, according to the City. Marilyn tells HG the police department issues significantly more motor vehicle summonses per year than e-bike violations.”
