Touchless Tailgate Operation by Foot Movement | BMW How-To
*Enjoy Comfort Access When Your Hands Are Full*
Here’s how to use the touchless tailgate feature on the new generation of BMW models for added convenience.
*Step 1: Position Yourself Correctly*
Stand about a forearm’s length away, centered at the rear of the vehicle. Make sure you have your key with you.
If you’re using a Digital Key, avoid placing it in your back pocket. For proper signal transmission, ensure your body is not between the car and the Digital Key.
*Step 2: Perform the Foot Motion*
Using a single, smooth motion, move your foot completely under the rear bumper and immediately pull it back out again.
Wait for the vehicle’s lights to flash—this confirms activation. The tailgate will then open automatically.
*Important Tips*
• Use one clean, fluid kicking motion
• Do not wave your foot side to side multiple times
• Do not pause mid-motion under the bumper
These actions may prevent the feature from working properly.
*Adjusting Tailgate Opening Height*
To avoid the tailgate hitting a garage ceiling or carport:
Go to “My Vehicle” → “Doors” → “Tailgate”
From here, you can adjust the opening height.
*Closing the Tailgate with Foot Motion*
Activate “Operation by foot movement” in the settings.
Once enabled, the same kicking motion will also close the tailgate automatically.
