A 15-year-old boy suffered major injuries Wednesday afternoon when he was stuck by a minibus while he was riding an e-bike in Huntington, police said.

The East Northport teen was heading north on Broadway on a Jasion E-bike about 4:48 p.m. when he entered the intersection at Little Plains Road and was hit by a school minibus going west, police said.

The teen, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with critical injuries.

The bus driver, Santa Cabrera-Toribio, 46, of Brentwood, and a school matron riding as a passenger were not injured, cops said.

Investigators impounded the e-bike for a safety check and safety section officers conducted a safety inspection of the minibus at the scene. Suffolk Police are asking anyone with information on the crash to contact them at 631.854.8252.

With warmer weather drawing more riders onto Long Island roads, doctors and safety experts who spoke during a recent Stony Brook University Hospital event warned that e-bike and e-scooter crashes have surged dramatically.

They reported that Stony Brook Children’s Hospital trauma admissions tied to the devices increased by 900% increase between 2023 and 2025. Physicians said many of the injuries are severe — including head trauma, broken bones and internal injuries — often worsened by low helmet use and the high speeds some devices can reach.

Speakers also said underage riders, lack of road-rule awareness and treating e-bikes like toys instead of motorized vehicles are contributing to the growing number of serious crashes.
