With warmer weather bringing more riders outdoors, the Channahon Police Department is reminding residents of safety rules for electric bicycles. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are permitted on village roads and designated bike paths, while Class 3 e-bikes are restricted to road use only and prohibited on paths.
All riders must follow Illinois traffic laws. The use of handheld mobile devices while riding is prohibited, and anyone under 18 is required to wear a helmet. E-bikes are not allowed on sidewalks or state highways. Riders also may not operate an electric bicycle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Officials emphasize that following these regulations helps improve safety for riders and others using local roads and paths.
