If you’re new to electric car ownership, then buying a home charger for your EV is probably a top priority. Or, perhaps you’re looking to replace your current home charger with something new and improved. Or maybe you just want to peruse what’s available in the home charger market or to see how units from different manufacturers stack up.
Luckily for you, we’re here to help you in your search for home chargers. There’s a wide variety of electric car chargers, but here we’ll focus mainly on the best of the best.
If you’ve been following our series on home charging, you already know why we recommend a Level 2 charger over a Level 1 charger. It’s mostly about the charging speed. Additionally, you might’ve read up on how many amps your charger should have. And you might’ve even glanced at our article on how much it costs to charge your electric car at home.
With those basics covered, we’re now moving on to choosing which home charger to buy. We don’t limit it to just one choice, though. Here we’ll present 7 standout at-home chargers, each with some strengths and weaknesses. You can decide which one is right for you.
Basic Things To Consider Before You Buy A Home Charger
Hardwired: This type connects directly to your home’s electrical system. It cannot be unplugged. It’s not portable. However, it’s safer than a plug-in unit, especially for outdoor use, and can charge your car faster (up to 80 amps) than a plug-in unit (up to 40 amps).
How To Safely Charge Your Electric Car
Plug-In: This charger typically plugs into a NEMA 14-50 outlet. It’s a good choice if you think you might need to move the unit to a different location in the near future.
Smart: These chargers connect to Wi-Fi so you can track energy costs, set charging reminders, and use utility time-of-use rates to charge when electricity is cheapest.
Basic: These simple chargers cost less and tend to be more reliable. They don’t have fancy software or an internet connection.
Cable Length: Most standard cables are 20 to 25 feet long. Check that the cable of the charger that you decide to buy will reach your car’s charging port. Make sure to account for how you’d like to park the car, too.
