The La Salle County Board on Thursday voted to ban bikes and e-bikes from the 14 trails that make up Catlin Park. The vote came two months after the issue was first raised with the board.

The trails are now used by hikers, sightseers and equestrians. Since the topic came up in February, groups and individuals had consistently shared their opposition to the concept of two wheels on the trails. Typical comments cited concerns about the quiet-running bikes’ getting in the way of walkers, and spooking horses, which could lead to injuries.

Of particular concern were class-1 electric bikes, which can reach speeds of 20 miles an hour.

The 333 acres of land that make up today’s Catlin Park were given to

La Salle County for the free enjoyment of the public.
