First responders across Southeast Texas are learning how to safely handle fires involving Teslas.

A training session hosted by Jefferson County Emergency Services District No. 3 brought together dozens of responders, including representatives from sheriff’s offices, fire departments and towing companies.

The class focused on how to respond to crashes involving electric vehicles, which can present unique challenges due to their high-voltage battery systems.

Officials say the training is part of an effort to ensure crews are prepared for emergencies involving newer vehicle technology.

“There’s not a whole bunch of them in our area, but they’re getting more and more of them coming into the area, and we want to be prepared for any type of emergencies that may happen,” Jody Herrera said .

First responders who attended the session say they plan to apply what they learned in future emergency situations involving Tesla vehicles.
