FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – As the weather warms across 21Country, more two-wheeled vehicles will share the region’s roadways.

The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) is reminding residents of the difference between electric bicycles and electric motorcycles.

According to the department, e-bikes are two-wheeled vehicles with operable pedals, a motor of 750 watts or less, and a maximum assisted speed of no more than 28 mph.

The department says e-motorcycles are two-wheeled vehicles that do not meet these qualifications, usually having no operable pedals, a motor of more than 2,000 watts, and a maximum assisted speed of over 45 mph.

According to the department, e-bikes follow bicycle laws, while e-motorcycles follow motorcycle laws and require a license, registration, or insurance.

The department says it asks residents to understand how a vehicle is classified before purchasing and using it.

“Just because a vehicle is electric does not automatically make it an e-bike,” a news release reads. “Riders should review Indiana law, follow all traffic regulations, and make sure they are operating the proper vehicle in the proper place.”
