Just yesterday, GM Authority brought you breaking news that General Motors had finally given the green light to move forward on a replacement for the Chevy Camaro, which was previously discontinued with the end of the 2024 model year after the last unit rolled off the line late in 2023. Now, GM Authority has learned more news that should help Camaro fans breathe a little easier.

According to GM Authority sources, the upcoming Chevy Camaro replacement will not be fully electric. This is obviously a major break from previous rumors that the Camaro could return as an electrified crossover.

Badging on the Chevy Camaro.

The decision to stick with internal combustion no doubt reflects current market conditions that point to significantly cooler demand for all-electric vehicles. Likely the biggest factor here is the recent expiration of the federal EV tax incentive, while new emissions regulations have eased pressure on automakers to rapidly electrify as many segments as possible. As a result, GM appears to be aligning this new Camaro replacement with traditional ICE-based performance expectations, rather than forcing a transition to batteries and electric motors.

Nevertheless, for buyers still interested in electric performance, Chevrolet already offers alternatives like the Chevy Blazer EV SS.

For those readers who may have missed yesterday’s news, the upcoming Camaro replacement is now expected to launch for the 2028 model year, with the first units rolling off the line during the 2027 calendar year. The new model is expected to ride on the rear-wheel-drive Alpha 2 platform, while production will once again take place at Lansing Grand River Assembly. As an aside, the Lansing facility will also produce the next-generation Cadillac CT5, plus a new Buick sedan.

For reference, the Camaro offered several gasoline-fueled powertrain options for its final 2024 model year, including the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT1, and the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4. Of course, we’ll have plenty more to say about the new Chevy Camaro replacement in the near future, so as always, keep it locked to GM Authority for all the latest.
