Tesla has added a new seven-seat option to its Model Y line-up, expanding the appeal of the UK’s best-selling electric car with a more family-focused configuration.

The new seven-seat layout is offered exclusively on the Model Y Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive and commands a £2,500 premium over the regular five-seater, taking the price to £54,490. Tesla quotes a maximum range of up to 372 miles.

The new seven-seater follows the introduction of the lower-cost £41,990 Rear-Wheel Drive Model Y and the range-topping Model Y Performance version over the past year, broadening the car’s reach across different types of buyer.

At the heart of the update is two forward-facing chairs designed to fold flat into the floor when not in use. Tesla says the layout is aimed at families needing extra flexibility, allowing the car to carry up to seven occupants while still retaining what it describes as “segment-leading cargo capacity”.

Access to the third row is handled by a sliding and folding second row, operated via buttons on the seatbacks to make getting in and out as easy as possible. With all seven seats in place, Tesla claims there’s still enough room for two carry-on suitcases in the boot and two larger bags in the front storage area.

Total load capacity stands at up to 2,094 litres, with 381 litres available behind the third row and an additional 116 litres under the bonnet. Folding the rearmost seats increases boot space to 894 litres, giving buyers the option to prioritise either passengers or luggage depending on the journey.

Inside, the seven-seat Model Y carries over the features introduced on the Premium line-up in 2025. Up front, there’s a 16-inch central touchscreen running Tesla’s latest in-house software, while the heated and ventilated front seats automatically adjust with the climate control system.

Passengers in the second row get their own eight-inch screen, offering entertainment, gaming and climate controls, with Bluetooth connectivity allowing wireless headphones to be connected. Tesla says this is aimed at improving long-distance comfort, particularly for families travelling with children.

Those in the third row get their own USB-C charging ports, while Tesla highlights the positioning of the seats beneath the rear glass as a way of maintaining headroom.

Elsewhere, the car features acoustic glass to reduce cabin noise levels, revised suspension hardware and tuning, and a panoramic glass roof. A 15-speaker audio system with a subwoofer is also included.

Order books for the Model Y Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive seven-seater are now open, with prices starting from £54,490 – a £2,500 premium for the extra two seats over the five-seater. The car comes as standard with Tesla’s Autopilot driver assistance technology and is hardware-ready for Full Self-Driving (Supervised), which Tesla says will be enabled remotely once approved by the UK government.
