HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) —The Huntsville Police Department is testing out new electric bicycles as part of an effort to enhance its bike unit patrol operations across the city.
According to the department, the electric bikes will allow officers to patrol areas more efficiently, especially in downtown areas, parks, greenways, and at large events where patrol vehicles may have limited access. The bikes can travel faster than traditional bicycles while still allowing officers to easily maneuver through crowds and tight spaces.
“We’re evaluating how e-bikes can help officers move faster through the City while staying highly visible and connected to the community. Think quicker access in crowded areas, easier coverage of trails and downtown spaces and a more approachable way to engage with our residents.”

The Huntsville Police bike unit, established in 1998, has utilized bicycles for specialized patrol for many years. The bike unit operates as part of the Special Operations Division and patrols downtown areas. Most police e-bikes are designed to reach speeds of 20 to 28 mph, while some specialized law enforcement models can exceed 30+ mph.
Other local agencies, such as the UNA Police Department, began adding e-bikes for patrols in late 2025 and early 2026.
The Huntsville Police Department’s Bike Unit generally consists of approximately 14 to 16 specialized officers.
