OGDEN, N.Y. — The Ogden Police Department is warning people about a rise in reckless e-bike riding, saying it has responded to several crashes involving e-bikes so far this year.

Police say two teens on an e-bike ran a red light and crashed into an SUV on Wednesday around 5:30 p.m. at one of the Village of Spencerport’s busiest intersections. The department said no one was seriously hurt, but the outcome could have been worse.

On Facebook, the department called on parents to be mindful of the dangers of their children or teens riding e-bikes. Both Spencerport and Ogden have laws restricting where people can ride e-bikes. The post reads:

“We are genuinely concerned that someone is going to be seriously injured or killed if this continues. E-bikes are fast, quiet, and often operated without an understanding of the rules of the road or the risks involved. What may seem like harmless fun can quickly turn into a life-altering situation without you even knowing. Not to mention, if your child is at fault, the damages from collisions are coming out of your pocket.”

“We are asking you to please take a few minutes to talk with your children about safe and lawful operation, remind them that traffic signals and rules apply to them, and make sure they understand where they can and cannot ride. Both the Village of Spencerport and the Town of Ogden have adopted local laws restricting where e-bikes may be operated. These laws are in place for safety, not to take away fun.”
