BYD said on Tuesday that it has “surpassed 40,000 registered units” in Spain, as the company celebrates the third anniversary of its passenger vehicle expansion to the South European country.

The Shenzhen-headquartered automaker expanded to both countries of the Iberian Peninsula — Spain and Portugal — in March 2023.

“What started in March 2023 as the debut of a brand with an ambitious vision is today a reality: leading the plug-in vehicle market in Spain and reaching 40,000 cumulative registered units,” the company wrote.

BYD offers both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), in a lineup that includes the recently introduced hybrid Atto 2 — which was the brand’s best-selling model in the country in February.

“In total, 13 models have been presented, and four major European launches have positioned Spain as one of the markets with the greatest potential for the multinational in Europe,” BYD stated on Tuesday.

The Atto 2 DM-i debuted late last year with an entry-level price of €18,190 ($21,100) — about €2,000 above the battery electric (BEV) version, which starts at €15,990.

Its best-selling EV — the Dolphin Surf — launched in mid-2025 with an entry-level price starting from €11,780.

Prices exclude the Value Added Tax (VAT), applied to private customer sales.

Sales Results

The automaker sold the last 20,000 units in just seven months — doubling from the previous milestone, reached in August 2025.

BYD was the best-selling new energy vehicle brand in Spain in February, with 3,003 vehicles registered.

It achieved a 15.4% share of the market overall.

The Chinese brand’s vehicle registrations in Spain have tripled in February when compared to a year ago.

According to official registration data, BYD sold 628 vehicles in Spain during its first year in the market, between March and December 2023.

Sales jumped to 5,393 units in 2024 and nearly tripled to 25,556 vehicles in 2025.

The yearly figures indicate that BYD delivered a combined 31,577 plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles in Spain through the end of 2025.

With 4,965 units registered in the first two months of 2026, the 40,000-unit milestone implies that at least 3,458 vehicles were sold in March.

If confirmed, March would represent a new monthly record for the brand in Spain, surpassing the 3,199 units registered in December 2025.

According to the registration tracking platform EU-EVs, BYD sold 1,289 fully electric vehicles in Spain between March 1 and Tuesday morning.

Spanish Network

Both the Spanish and Portuguese markets are managed by Alberto de Aza, General Director of BYD Iberia.

The automaker now employs over 1,000 professionals in the country, including direct employees and dealership staff, BYD stated.

The company entered the market with three showrooms in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia.

It now operates 102 official dealerships covering nearly all of Spain.

Additionally, BYD plans to grow the network to 130 locations this year — as part of the target of operating 2,000 sales points in Europe, as reported by Reuters.

After opening its first spare parts logistics center in Guadalajara in May 2024, BYD established its Spanish headquarters in Las Tablas, Madrid.

Last October, Reuters reported that BYD was considering Spain for its third European factory, after Turkey and Hungary.

A BYD Portugal executive revealed weeks later that Spain’s neighbor was also under consideration.

Earlier this year, BYD began trial production in its first European plant in Hungary, following delays in completing construction of the passenger vehicle factory.

Manufacturing fully electric vehicles in Europe allows the automaker to avoid the European Commission tariffs imposed in October 2024 on imported EVs.

Overseas Expansion

BYD‘s overseas deliveries have held steady at around 100,000 units per month in the first two months of the year.

The company sold 4,602,436 new energy vehicles globally in 2025, a 7.7% increase year-over-year, posting the slowest growth in five years.

As of the end of 2025, the company was present across 110 countries.

BYD said it aims to achieve 1.3 million sales outside China this year, a 24.3% increase from the nearly 1.05 million exports recorded in 2025.

On Monday, Reuters reported that the company is “highly confident” of reaching its 2026 overseas sales target of 1.5 million vehicles or even higher — a 15.4% increase from the previously set guidance.

The company is switching focus to international markets as sales in its domestic market continue tumbling year over year.

Earlier this month, BYD also revealed that it is raising its 2026 sales target in the Brazilian market.

It now expects to deliver 250,000 vehicles in Brazil, where passenger vehicle assembly began last year.
