Gas prices are climbing again, and this time the Iran war is driving them up. Crude oil is approaching $100 a barrel, and the average American is already paying around $3.91 at the pump. Experts say costs across the entire economy will follow, with lower income households hit hardest.

According to Inside Climate News reporter Lee Hedgepeth, history shows that fuel price shocks tend to push consumers toward electric vehicles and renewables. That pattern is already playing out in parts of Asia, where EV dealership visits are ticking up in response to the crisis. So why is the U.S. lagging behind?

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island points to a coordinated misinformation campaign. He told Inside Climate News that the Trump administration is actively working to convince the public that clean energy and EVs are too expensive, even though that claim does not hold up to scrutiny. Whitehouse described it as a propaganda strategy designed to protect the fossil fuel industry’s profits and the interests of major political donors.

The White House pushed back, insisting that green energy is unreliable and unaffordable, and framed record oil and gas production as a national security win. Meanwhile, Trump’s policy agenda has delivered real financial rewards to fossil fuel producers, including a new tax credit for metallurgical coal production buried in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act worth an estimated $200 to $300 million annually to the industry.

Experts say the solution is not just better messaging. Reinstating EV tax credits, correcting misinformation, and building policy that genuinely supports a cleaner grid would give families and businesses real choices. Reducing dependence on oil protects household budgets, strengthens U.S. manufacturers competing against companies like China’s BYD, and benefits the planet too.

The health of your wallet and the health of the earth are more connected than fossil fuel talking points would have you believe. Do your own research, tune out the noise, and consider what a plant-based lifestyle and cleaner energy choices could mean for your life and the world around you.
