A 17-year-old Wausau, Wisconsin male was arrested on Saturday in Islamorada’s Indian Mound subdivision for DUI and other offenses after fleeing from sheriff’s deputies on an electric dirt motorcycle.

The sheriff’s office said deputies attempted to stop two electric dirt motorcycles riding on the bicycle lane of U.S. 1 without lights at approximately 11:30 p.m. near MM 86. Both suspects fled into Indian Mound where one of them crashed and suffered minor injuries to his knee. The juvenile suspect was apprehended and the electric motorcycle was confiscated for evidence.

The juvenile had a blood alcohol content of .138. He was charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding, and resisting arrest. He was taken to jail.

More charges/arrests may be pending.

Per the sheriff’s office, electric dirt bikes are not street legal. Classified as off-road vehicles, electric dirt bikes are not eligible for registration, aren’t equipped with operable pedals and are capable of speeds of more than 28 mph. They’re not allowed on roadways, sidewalks, bike lanes, bike paths and public rights-of-way.
