Police in California say they received a call this week about a motorist passed out in their Tesla — while it was still moving.

The Vacaville Police Department said a concerned community member called shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday to report another driver who appeared to be passed out behind the wheel, while their vehicle was still “moving through busy city streets.”

The caller provided dispatchers with real-time information on the vehicle’s location, helping officers quickly stop the vehicle near Elmira Road and Shasta Driver.

Officers sought to determine whether the driver was experiencing a medical emergency or some other issue, alcohol containers in the passenger seat.

Photos shared by the police department show the driver slumped over apparently unconscious in the driver’s seat, along with a pizza box and mini wine bottles in the passenger seat.

Police say the investigation revealed the driver was allegedly under the influence of both alcohol and cannabis, and he was arrested for DUI.

The Tesla he was in was apparently on autopilot while he slept behind the wheel.

“California drivers are permitted to use newer assistive driving safety features in their vehicles. But just like every other driver on the road, they still need to be conscious, alert, and not under the influence while operating them,” police said.

“Thank you to the community members who recognized something was wrong and gave dispatchers the information officers needed to respond quickly,” police said. “Your calls help make our streets safer and improve quality of life for everyone in Vacaville!”
