A few years ago, if you wanted an electric car in Australia, you were looking at $50,000 minimum. Today I’ve got 17 of them under $40,000, from nine different brands, and the list literally changed while I was making the video.
We’re talking BYD, MG, Hyundai, GAC, GWM, Jaecoo, Chery and Fiat. Some of these start under $25,000.
The competition between brands has driven prices down faster than almost anyone predicted, and Australian buyers now have more choice than Europe or America.
I break down what each car actually costs, how the real-world range compares to the advertised figures, and share my honest verdict on which ones I’ve actually driven.
There’s a brand-new arrival that reshuffles the whole segment, a car that looks like a Mini for a very specific reason and one car on this list that has a warranty so bad I genuinely can’t recommend anyone buy it right now.
