Indian motorcycles market started the 2026 with a stellar growth of +29.7% signals a new acceleration phase, driven by massive unmet mobility demand across urban and semi-urban areas and consolidates its position as the largest and fastest-growing 2-wheeler market globally.

Data reported for India regards wholesales and not – as for all the other countries – registrations. The perimeter of data covered includes motorcycles, moped, scooter, and ATV, both on ICE and electric engines. In addition, data includes the commercial three wheeler, very popular in the country.

Motorcycles Industry Trend and Perspectives

India remains by far the largest two-wheeler market in the world, continuing to expand year after year, supported by strong GDP growth, a young and growing population, and structurally weak urban transport infrastructure. These factors make motorcycles and scooters the primary mobility solution for hundreds of millions of consumers.

Government policy has further accelerated this trajectory. A comprehensive “green mobility” strategy, including incentives for both consumers and manufacturers, has enabled the electric two-wheeler segment to surpass 1 million annual units, attracting not only all major OEMs but also a wave of innovative domestic EV startups.

Between 2019 and 2025, the market expanded by 2.8 million units, demonstrating strong resilience despite major global disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic, energy price shocks, and supply chain constraints linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The industry reached a historic milestone in 2024, becoming the first country in the world to exceed 20 million annual sales (+16.6%). This momentum continued in 2025, with the market setting yet another record and confirming its structural growth trajectory.

What is unfolding in 2026 is exceeding even the most optimistic expectations. In the first two months alone, the market surged by an extraordinary +29.7%, reaching 3.8 million units. Growth is broad-based, with both ICE and electric segments expanding rapidly, driven by unprecedented consumer demand and the essential need for personal mobility in increasingly congested urban environments.
