Sony & Honda discontinue AFEELA electric vehicles project

Sony and Honda have discontinued development on all AFEELA models and will issue refunds on reservation fees.

The dream of Sony and Honda electric vehicle is seemingly dead for now as the AFEELA has been discontinued. This collaboration between the two Japanese companies was supposed to produce two models of vehicle that would compete in the EV market with the likes of Tesla, Rivian, and other EV manufacturers.

Sony and Honda announced the discontinuation of AFEELA development in a press release from their collaborative website this week. A change in Honda’s EV production strategies is cited as a main contributing factor to the discontinuation:

As a result of Honda’s reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy announced on March 12, 2026, SHM will not be able to utilize certain technologies and assets that were originally planned to be provided by Honda at the time of SHM’s initial business planning. In light of this change, SHM has determined that it does not have a viable path forward to bring the Models to market as originally planned.

This discontinuation will likely come as a bite to many that were hoping to see another proper competitor to the likes of Tesla and China’s BYD, especially since the AFEELA has been in production for years and made best-of appearance at CES 2023, 2024, and 2026. However, the cost of tech in 2026 has also ballooned off of memory and chip shortage thanks to large-scale investments in AI using up those components. After all, Honda’s shift in EV strategy was said to be a direct result of “recent changes in the business environment.”

With the AFEELA EVs discontinued for now, it’s another option that won’t be coming for EV enthusiasts and interested buyers. However, Sony Honda Mobility remains in business for the time being. Stay tuned to the Sony topic for more updates.
