The Brief

Nearly 100,000 EVs were recalled, impacting multiple models.

Battery defects could affect performance and safety.

Inspections and repairs will be handled through dealerships.

German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen is recalling close to 100,000 electric vehicles because of issues tied to battery modules that may not meet specifications.

According to the German federal motor authority, around 28,000 of those recalled are in Germany.

What we know

Reuters reports that the recall impacts roughly 75,000 vehicles from Volkswagen’s ID series, along with nearly 20,000 Cupra Borns that were produced between February 2022 and August 2024.

Faulty high-voltage battery modules could reduce driving range and, in rare cases, increase the risk of a fire, according to the manufacturer.

What’s next

Recall notices were sent out earlier this month. Vehicles brought in for services will receive a software update, followed by an inspection of the high-voltage battery. Any defective modules will be replaced if necessary.
