Your dream of cruising the streets with PlayStation-inspired controls has hit a roadblock. Back in January, Sony Honda Mobility, a joint project between electronics giant Sony and carmaker Honda, showed off prototypes of its Afeela electric vehicles.

Now, the company says its two EV vehicles will not move forward.

The move is a surprise, given the company’s January announcement that, in addition to the Afeela 1 sedan, which was to be manufactured in the US, it was working on an SUV concept that would arrive in 2028.

In a statement, Sony Honda Mobility said that “as a result of Honda’s reassessment of its automobile electrification strategy announced on March 12, 2026, SHM will not be able to utilize certain technologies and assets that were originally planned to be provided by Honda at the time of SHM’s initial business planning.”

Honda’s change of plans included other cancellations of EVs in the pipeline.

One of the draws of the Afeela project was its deep integration with Sony’s PlayStation products, including Remote Play on in-car displays. This would have been useful for EV owners charging, who would just need to bring along a PlayStation controller to access their games remotely. The Afeela was also to include deep customization, including downloadable lighting effects, color schemes and even motor sounds. As such, the Afeela sedan became known in some circles as Sony’s PlayStation car.

Deliveries of the sedan were expected to begin as early as late 2026, with the SUV version arriving two years later. Orders were open for the sedan at prices ranging from $89,900 to $102,900. Sony Honda Mobility said in its statement that full refunds will be issued for those who paid reservation fees in the US.
