Subaru fans who need more space for their gear and extra passengers have something to look forward to. The Japanese carmaker plans to reveal a brand-new electric SUV at the New York Auto Show. This new model will have three rows of seats, making it the largest member of the Subaru electric family. The reveal date lands on April 1, but the company insists this big vehicle is the real deal and not a prank.

This new SUV is a big step for Subaru. Right now, the brand offers three fully electric models: Solterra, Uncharted, and the Trailseeker. Adding a larger vehicle helps the company reach families who need more than five seats. Unsurprisingly, the new Subaru will share many parts with the Toyota Highlander EV. Subaru and Toyota often work together to build EVs, helping both companies save money and share technology.

The teaser image released by Subaru shows a front end that looks very familiar. It features split-style headlights and a glowing logo, similar to what you see on the Solterra. You can also spot a sturdy roof rack and a “shark fin” style antenna on top. These features suggest the car will maintain the rugged, outdoorsy look that Subaru owners love. Even though it runs on batteries, it still looks ready for a trip to the mountains.

One of the most exciting details is the power. Subaru says this new SUV will pack 313 kW (420 hp) – a lot of muscle for a family hauler. It’s interesting because the current Toyota Highlander models offer two battery options. One is a 77 kWh pack, and the larger one is 95.8 kWh. The smaller setup provides 165 kW (221 hp), while the stronger version offers 252 kW (338 hp). Subaru’s version is promising even more performance.

The new Subaru will likely travel between 270 miles and 320 miles on a full charge, thanks to the Toyota’s larger battery. When that battery gets low, drivers can use a DC fast charger to go from 10% to 80% power in about 30 minutes. The vehicle will also use a NACS port – same type of plug that Tesla uses, making it much easier for owners to find a place to plug in while on a road trip.

Inside the cabin, technology will take center stage. We expect minimal design changes between Toyota and Subaru – drivers will look at a 12.3-inch digital screen behind the steering wheel for speed and battery info. A larger 14-inch touch screen will sit in the middle of the dashboard for maps and music. The interior will also feature a sound system with at least six speakers and mood lighting that can change between 64 different colors.

Subaru has not announced the official price yet, but we can look at its competitors for a hint. Since the 2027 Toyota Highlander is expected to arrive late this year, the Subaru version should follow a similar schedule. This timing puts it right up against other big SUVs like the Volkswagen Atlas. It enters a busy market where more families are looking to trade their gas-powered engines for quiet, powerful EVs.

Choosing an electric vehicle often comes down to convenience. Subaru plans to include dual-level charging with the car. This works with both standard 120V home outlets and faster 240V outlets, giving the owners the ability to charge their SUV overnight in their garage without needing to install an expensive charging station right away. It is a small detail that makes switching to a battery-powered car much easier for the average person.
