Drone footage shows a mysterious vehicle at Tesla’s Texas factory, likely the extended Model Y L with more space and seating. Learn about its features and potential US launch.

A mysterious vehicle spotted at Tesla’s Texas factory could be an extended version of the Model Y. Drone footage revealed a body partially wrapped and placed in a shipping container.

The shape suggests it’s the Model Y L, a longer-wheelbase variant already produced in China. This model measures about 4.98 meters in length with a 3.04-meter wheelbase, both larger than the standard version. The images show longer rear doors and a distinct window line compared to the regular Model Y. The body appears to be a “body-in-white,” used for testing and production preparation.

The Model Y L is already available in some markets with six or seven seats, offering around 10% more trunk space. Tesla might localize production of this version in the U.S. by mid-2026.

The company hasn’t officially confirmed this, but the prototype’s emergence aligns with Giga Texas’s expansion and Tesla’s strategy to broaden its lineup. If launched in the U.S., this version could strengthen Tesla’s position in the family car segment by providing more space and practicality.
