Chinese-based car maker MG has won approval for its first electric ute in Australia, continuing the rapid rollout of new models in recent months.
The MGU9, which will be available in a single variant, follows on from the MG4 EV Urban, which will be available in multiple variants – according to new paperwork.
The news was shared on the Electric Vehicles for Australia Facebook group by EV enthusiast Will K, and according to the approval documentation, the MG U9 electric ute offering will come with a dual-motor 325 kW powertrain.

It is unclear from the filing about the size of the ute’s battery pack, but it is expected to be a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) pack with around 102 kWh of battery capacity that has been seen in the LDV e-Terron in other markets.
We also have more details on some dimensions and weights, with the MG U9 Ute coming in at almost 5.5 metres in length.
It will also have a tare weight of 2,815 kg, which, for comparison a bit heavier than the popular BYD Shark 6 PHEV ute, which comes in at 2,710 kg.
On the powertrain front, two motors are listed. On the rear, there is a 200 kW motor, while the front has 125 kW, bringing the total to 325 kW.
This is also the first ute in our market to offer a maximum braked towing capacity of 3,500 kg – enough to tow your boat – and a running clearance of 230 mm.
More details and pricing for the 2026 MGU9 EV lineup will be released closer to the launch, likely during H2 2026.
MG has seen a lot of success in Australia with its EV range, particularly the small and affordable MG4 hatchback. That car alone has sold more than 13,000 cars since its launch back in 2023.

Last year, the company also added an SUV version of its MG4 called the MGS5, which has also seen good interest in the market.
All of MG’s current EVs are backed by its industry-leading 10-year warranty, which might also make it to this ute offering when it lands.
