BMW i3 2027 preview: Game-changing electric car targets Tesla Model 3 with 900km driving range
Tim Nicholson previews the 2027 BMW i3 mid-size sedan as it prepares for its Australian debut. Built on the 800-volt Neue Klasse architecture, this electric sibling to the internal-combustion 3 Series represents a significant technical shift for the Bavarian brand. The video explores the initial i3 50 xDrive grade which features a dual-motor powertrain producing 345kW and 645Nm.
The walk-around covers the exterior design including the horizontal illuminated kidney grilles and signature shark-nose profile. Inside, the cabin move towards a minimalist aesthetic with the Panoramic Vision head-up display and a large central touchscreen replacing most physical switchgear. Practicality remains a priority with the dedicated EV platform allowing for a flat floor and improved passenger space.
This preview details how the i3 aims to challenge the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Polestar 2 in the premium electric segment. Technical highlights include DC fast-charging speeds up to 400kW and a projected driving range up to 900km. Tim also discusses the local arrival timing and how this sedan will sit alongside future internal combustion engine versions of the 3 Series.
