The Visalia Police Department recently conducted a targeted enforcement operation focused on the illegal and unsafe use of e-bikes and motorcycles on city streets following community complaints and growing safety concerns.
Police said Friday the concerns largely involved juveniles operating motorized vehicles in violation of traffic laws.
During the operation, officers issued 15 citations for various violations and towed two motorcycles. Violations included minors younger than 16 riding motorcycles on public streets, riders not wearing required safety helmets, and other traffic-related offenses.
Police reminded parents and guardians that many e-bikes and motorized vehicles used by juveniles may legally be classified as motorcycles or motor-driven cycles under California law. Those vehicles require proper licensing, registration and safety equipment to be operated on public roads.
Operating the vehicles without a proper license, safety gear or while violating traffic laws creates a serious safety risk for riders and the public, police said.
Minors caught illegally operating motorcycles or similar motorized vehicles on city streets may receive citations and have the vehicles impounded or towed.
