Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Jaecoo has expanded its UK range with the arrival of a new flagship SUV, the 8 SHS-P, bringing three-row seating and a more luxurious offering to the brand’s lineup.

Jaecoo has become popular with buyers loving the Range Rover-like styling and value, and this new model is set to rival the sought-after SUV, but for less than half the price.

The new Jaecoo 8 sits at the top of the range and introduces the company’s latest version of its Super Hybrid System plug-in hybrid technology. Prices start from £45,500 on the road for the seven-seat Luxury model and £47,500 for the six-seat Executive version – with order books now open ahead of first customer deliveries expected from May 2026.

The Jaecoo 8 is the first model from the brand to offer both six- and seven-seat layouts within the same vehicle, with the two variants aimed at slightly different types of buyers. The Luxury version focuses on family usability with seven seats, while the Executive model prioritises comfort with six seats and a more premium rear passenger experience.

In the Luxury model, the emphasis is on flexibility and practicality, with space for passengers, luggage and family gear, alongside multiple ISOFIX child seat mounting points. The Executive version replaces the traditional second row seats with a couple of heated, ventilated and massaging captain’s chairs, while the driver also benefits from extendable thigh support.

Both versions use the Chery Group’s Super Hybrid System, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a three-speed DHT transmission and all-wheel drive. The system produces a combined 422bhp and 580Nm of torque, delivering a claimed 0-62mph time of 5.8 seconds.

The plug-in hybrid system also enables electric-only driving for up to 83 miles, while the combined range is claimed to exceed 700 miles with a full tank and fully charged battery. Fast charging is supported at up to 40kW DC, allowing the battery to charge from 30 to 80 per cent in around 20 minutes.

A 6.6kW vehicle-to-load function is also included, allowing the vehicle’s battery to power external electrical devices, something the brand says fits with its outdoor-focused positioning.

To boost the Jaecoo 8’s positioning as a Range Rover rival, it comes with some serious off-roading tech. Lockable differentials are offered for the first time on a Jaecoo model, working alongside the brand’s adaptive all-terrain response system. The SUV is also capable of wading through water up to 600mm deep, while continuous damping control adaptive suspension is designed to maintain stability across a variety of surfaces.

Inside, the cabin luxury features are dialed up with dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and cooled wireless charging pads. There’s also a 14-speaker Sony sound system that includes speakers integrated into the headrests – navigation instructions or phone calls can be fed through them for a more personal experience for the driver.

Front seats across the range offer heating, ventilation and five massage modes, while the Executive version adds Nappa leather trim and a zero-gravity front passenger seat with a 123-degree adjustable angle. A “Boss Button” allows rear passengers to adjust the front passenger seat to increase legroom.

Safety technology is also a focus, with the Jaecoo 8 featuring 10 airbags and up to 19 driver assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and blind spot detection. The vehicle’s body structure uses up to 85 per cent high-strength steel.

Victor Zhang, UK country director for Jaecoo, said: “This is the first time we’re offering both a six- and a seven-seat configuration within a single model, ensuring the Jaecoo 8 is suited to a wide range of use cases – from families to professionals and everyone in between.

“As our flagship, and the halo model for us here in the UK, it plays a key role in showcasing what Jaecoo stands for, bringing together our approach to modern design, advanced hybrid technology and genuine all-road capability in a way that feels both premium and highly usable.”

The Jaecoo 8 joins the existing UK lineup that includes the Jaecoo 7, and the smaller Jaecoo 5 models. Last year Jaecoo sold an impressive 28,232 cars, while the brand has already sold nearly 7,000 cars in the first two months of 2026.

All Jaecoos come with a seven-year or 100,000-mile warranty, alongside an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty covering the battery.
