A teenage boy has died after a collision between an electric bike and a car in Chesterfield last week.

Finley Dawson, 14, was riding an e-bike with a 15-year-old pillion passenger in Newbold Road at around 8:30pm on Thursday, March 5, when it collided with a Kia Sportage.

Finley and his pillion passenger were thrown from the e-bike into the road and were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

On arrival at hospital, Finley’s injuries were described as “non survivable” and he died the following day (Friday, March 6).

The pillion passenger remains in hospital and he is said to be in a serious, but stable condition.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire police said: “Finley’s family are being supported by specialist officers, and our thoughts go out to them at this difficult time.

“The driver of the Kia is being treated as a witness and is assisting officers with enquiries.

“No arrests have been made.”

The families of both boys have now spoken out about the dangers of e-bikes being ridden on the road.

In a joint statement, they said: “There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life.

“His friend has sustained serious injuries and has to come to terms with growing up without his best mate.

“Although the thrill of riding an e-bike on the road seems exciting, it can also be fatal.

“That quick thrill is not worth the risk.”
