Volvo is strengthening its hybrid lineup and plans to launch the new XC70 in Europe after summer. This model aims to fill the gap between the XC60 and XC90 while putting pressure on competitors like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. Although the EX60 is gaining popularity, the company acknowledges that fully electric SUVs still can’t replace demand for PHEVs in the premium segment. This is where the XC70 becomes a strategic addition. The new XC70 is based on the Chinese version introduced in 2025 and comes with two plug-in hybrid systems. Both use a 154 hp 1.5 Turbo gasoline engine paired with an electric motor. Combined power outputs are 313 hp and 455 hp respectively. The versions differ in battery capacity: 21.2 kWh and 39.6 kWh. The larger battery provides up to 200 km of electric range, making the XC70 one of Europe’s longest-range PHEVs and matching its technological relative, the Lynk & Co 08.Charging times are also impressive: 0–80% in 39 minutes for the base battery and just 23 minutes for the larger one, suggesting fast-charging capability of at least 50 kW. In Europe, the XC70 will get an 11 kW onboard charger, while the Chinese version is limited to 7 kW.The interior follows the design language of Volvo’s new “green” models, featuring minimalism, a vertical multimedia layout, and an advanced digital dashboard closer to the EX60 than the XC90 PHEV. Dimensions include a length of 4.82 meters, a five-seat cabin, and luggage space typical of D-SUVs.Volvo hasn’t announced prices yet, but based on the positioning of the Chinese counterpart and the brand’s market stance, the expected range is around €65,000–70,000. The XC70 will be a key part of Volvo’s European strategy, focused on premium PHEVs with long electric range and fast charging—a segment where German manufacturers have been cautious.
