Six juveniles from ages 13 to 17 were taken into custody Thursday afternoon, March 5 after allegedly riding electric bikes recklessly through rush-hour traffic in the Hancock County town, the McCordsville Police Department said in a social media post.

Hancock County 911 Center in Greenfield received calls around 4:45 p.m. Thursday regarding a group of riders in the area of County Road 600 West and County Road 900 North. Callers said the juveniles were performing wheelies, passing vehicles on the shoulder, and disregarding traffic signals while traveling at high speeds. No injuries were reported.

A McCordsville patrol officer in a marked vehicle located the group as it turned westbound onto Broadway from County Road 600 West. The officer saw the juveniles riding across multiple lanes of traffic, with at least one rider performing a wheelie while passing the police vehicle. The group was traveling about 40 mph.

The group continued to ride after the officer activated emergency lights and a siren to make a traffic stop. The bicyclist traveled for about three-quarters of a mile, passing motorists and going into oncoming traffic before turning into a Meijer department store parking lot. The juveniles continued riding both on and off the roadway through the parking lot toward Carroll Road. Due to the risk to public safety, the pursuing officer terminated the pursuit.

Police later caught up with the six riders and took them into custody without incident.
