SAUGUS — With the Town putting a strong focus on e-bike safety, especially with the warmer weather coming up, the police department dealt with a heavy number of calls over the weekend regarding bikes causing trouble.

According to multiple social media posts and Saugus Police Department logs, calls were made across Saturday for multiple groups on bikes disrupting residents.

Calls began at 1:11 p.m., according to logs, with about five youths riding in and out of traffic, according to a caller. Officers were unable to locate the youths in the area.

The next call came in at 3:09 p.m. when a caller reported a group of approximately 10 “teenage boys” riding bikes in and out of oncoming traffic around Hamilton Street and down Main Street. Officers spoke with the involved parties about the rules for safely riding their bikes.

Two more youths were reported riding an electric motorcycle through the Square One Mall. Shortly after, a call came in for two males on bikes stopping in front of a vehicle and refusing to let her proceed.

The Town and the police department have continued to push safety on e-bikes and other forms of transportation, including a forum with local representatives and Sen. Brendan Crighton, along with other entities, to figure out the best steps forward.

The hope continues to be to find the right path before serious injury takes place, with multiple references to the teenager who died in November 2025 due to an e-bike crash.
