Subaru Begins Building Electric Cars in Japan and the First Model Might Surprise You
Subaru has officially started building electric vehicles at its Gunma Yajima Plant in Japan, marking the company’s first in house global battery electric vehicle production. The first model to roll off the new line is the Subaru Trailseeker.
This move represents a major shift in Subaru’s manufacturing strategy. The upgraded production line can now build battery electric vehicles, gasoline powered models, and hybrid vehicles on the same assembly system. This flexible manufacturing approach allows Subaru to adapt quickly as demand for electric vehicles grows worldwide.
The Gunma Yajima Plant upgrades began in August 2025 and were completed in January 2026. The facility now represents Subaru’s next step toward electrification while maintaining the company’s traditional strengths in reliability, safety, and all wheel drive engineering.
The Subaru Trailseeker becomes the brand’s second global electric vehicle and continues the long standing partnership between Subaru and Toyota. The collaboration allows both companies to combine engineering expertise while developing new electric vehicle technologies.
