MG Motor Australia has confirmed the MG4 EV Urban will arrive in April 2026. The new model is a front-wheel-drive electric hatchback aimed at city drivers and first-time EV buyers. It comes with two battery options: a 43kWh standard range and a 54kWh extended range.

The MG4 EV Urban is a separate vehicle from the existing MG4 range. It sits on a different platform, uses a softer exterior design, and is positioned as the entry point to MG’s electric line-up in Australia.

The MG EV line-up currently features the RWD MG4, MGS5 and Cyberster.

The MG4 EV Urban is a larger car than the existing MG4. It measures 4,395mm long, 1,842mm wide and 1,549mm tall, on a 2,750mm wheelbase. The existing MG4 is 4,287mm long on a 2,705mm wheelbase. That is about 108mm longer and 45mm more wheelbase.

Despite the larger footprint, the MG4 EV Urban keeps a similar height profile. Boot space is 577 litres (568L for the 54kWh variant), expanding to over 1,360 litres with the rear seats folded.

The 43kWh variant has a WLTP range of around 325 km. The 54kWh variant extends that to 405 km. Both are LFP batteries, which means you can charge to 100% daily without worrying about battery degradation.

DC fast charging uses a CCS connector. The 43kWh model supports up to 82 kW, while the 54kWh model goes up to 87 kW. Both can charge from 10-80% in around 28-31 minutes on a fast charger. AC charging is up to 11 kW (to be confirmed).

MG4 EV Urban vs MG4 Range and Charging

One thing to note: the existing MG4 64kWh and 77kWh variants charge faster at 140 kW DC. The Urban’s 82-87 kW ceiling is lower, which is a trade-off for the smaller battery size and lower price point.

The MG4 EV Urban has been tested by Euro NCAP and received a 5-star rating. Adult occupant protection scored 87%, child occupant 85%, vulnerable road users 85%, and safety assist 80%. The rating was awarded in 2025.

The car comes with a full advanced driver assistance suite. This includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. These features are standard across the range.

The MG4 EV Urban enters a growing segment of affordable electric hatchbacks in Australia. Its closest rivals are the BYD Dolphin and the GWM Ora. Pricing has not been confirmed for Australia, but based on UK and China market pricing, the Urban will sit below the existing MG4 range.

The BYD Dolphin starts from around $29,990 plus ORC in Australia. It offers a 44.9 kWh or 60.4 kWh battery, with WLTP range of 340 km and 427 km respectively. DC fast charging peaks at 60 kW on the smaller pack and 88 kW on the larger.

The GWM Ora is priced from around $35,990 drive-away with a 58 kWh battery and 400 km WLTP range. It charges at up to 80 kW DC. The Geely EX2 is also expected to arrive in 2026 as another entry-level option.

If MG prices the Urban aggressively, it could undercut the Dolphin and GWM Ora while offering a larger boot and more interior space. The 54kWh variant in particular would match or beat the Dolphin on range.
