Fans of the humble sedan have one more reason to mourn, as the standard-model Hyundai Ioniq 6 has been canceled in the US for the foreseeable future. Potentially due to slow sales and rising tariff costs on imported goods, the automaker announced that its electric four-door would only be offered in America in high-performance Ioniq 6 N form, with plans for the standard models suspended indefinitely. The news is somewhat surprising because the attractively facelifted 2026 model has been seen several times in the US, but alas, we won’t get a crack at it.

Selling Down Old Stock

Although we’re a bit bummed that the Ioniq 6 won’t be coming here, it’s also not hard to understand Hyundai’s reasoning. Even when EV sales were booming thanks to now-defunct tax incentives and public infrastructure investments (the latter of which were reinstated by a federal judge), the Ioniq 6 never sold in huge numbers. In 2023, its first year on the market, the electric four-door sold 12,999 units, about 40 percent the amount that the crossover-shaped Ioniq 5 sold. That was its best sales year, with 2024 losing a couple hundred new owners and 2025 losing a couple thousand.

In a statement to CarBuzz, a Hyundai representative said that there continue to be 2025 examples of the Ioniq 6 available at dealers for customers who still want one last crack at the four-door EV but don’t want to wait for the arrival of the N model later this year. We presume that Hyundai retailers will continue to sell down those 2025 leftovers, meaning it could be possible to snag a pretty sweet deal on the EV with up to 342 miles of range. Just try not to think about the now-forbidden 2026 model’s slightly longer estimate.

Waiting Impatiently For The N

In the future, the swoopy Ioniq 6 N will carry the flag for Hyundai’s electric sedans on our shores. The company hasn’t given a release date yet, but it did say that it should come before the end of the year. We hope that’s true, but we’re also concerned that the same tariff concerns that applied to the less sporty models will also dog the N – it’s built in South Korea just like its less powerful sibling. Perhaps a higher asking price (justified by some reportedly scintillating performance) will soften the blow of reduced profits due to import duties.

Going forward, our award-winning Ioniq 6 lineup will consist of the all-new Ioniq 6 N. This high-performance electric sport sedan delivers truly thrilling, track-ready dynamics coupled with everyday usability. Ioniq 6 N arrives later this year.

–Hyundai Motor America Spokesperson

If and when it shows up at US dealers, the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N will offer 641 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, courtesy of an upgraded dual-motor powertrain borrowed from the likewise aggressive Ioniq 5 N. The lower, lighter sedan should also give the driver more involvement in the business of going fast, especially since it’ll incorporate its crossover sibling’s simulated gear shifts and selectable propulsion sounds. Our experiences with the Ioniq 5 N showed that these features genuinely added a fun factor to the driving experience that’s otherwise missing in most high-powered electric cars.

Hyundai’s CEO confirms more gas, electric, and hybrid N cars are coming soon.

Still, we’re going to miss the regular Ioniq 6. We always enjoy driving one of Hyundai’s EVs, and the prettier, sleeker, and Supercharger-compatible 2026 model would’ve only added to our appreciation.
