In the latest chapter of the EV versus gas saga, one man looked at how much it would cost an American to charge a Tesla compared to filling up a GMC Sierra.
A journalist at Yahoo! did some number-crunching in light of the end of the federal EV tax credit.
Now that EV buyers couldn’t get the $7,500 incentive, would there still be savings available?
He compared the monthly costs of a Tesla to the monthly costs of a gas-powered GMC Sierra.

How did a Tesla compare to a GMC Sierra when it came to cost?
Travis Woods, a writer at Yahoo!, wanted to draw direct comparisons between the two vehicles.
In his article, he started off with a driving average of around 1,100 to 1,200 miles a month, in line with the Federal Highway Administration’s average American driving distance of 1,123 miles per month.
To that, he estimated the average cost of electricity was 17 cents per kWh, and the average gas price was $3.15 per gallon.
With those figures in mind, he drew the following conclusions.
To charge up a popular Tesla Model, like the Model 3 or Model Y, would cost between $35 and $60 a month.
By comparison, the GMC Sierra would cost between $197 and $210, depending on mileage and gas prices by region.
That makes quite the stark contrast, doesn’t it?
So even without the federal tax credit, EV drivers could expect to make some savings.

EVs and gas cars are constantly being compared
It’s the car debate that seemingly has no end in sight – it’s The NeverEnding Story without the magical creatures.
As a result, no stone has been left unturned in comparing EVs to gas cars.
One study found that electric car owners were replacing their cars at a much faster rate, every three years, compared to every 12 years for ICE drivers.
Another revealed that electric cars were still cheaper to charge, even when drivers opted for public chargers over home charging.
Safe to say, there’s no shortage of resources out there for anyone wanting to do their research and make an informed decision.
