Yango Zambia, part of the global tech company Yango Group, has announced the launch of a new electric motorbike deployment in Lusaka for partner couriers and motor drivers, marking a significant step toward cleaner and more energy-efficient urban mobility solutions in the country. The initiative introduces electric motorbikes powered by swappable batteries and supported by solar-assisted infrastructure, designed to reduce the environmental footprint of last-mile transport while improving reliability and affordability for couriers and motor drivers.

The launch, held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, was officiated by the Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike E. Mposha, MP, and attended by Her Worship the Mayor of the Greater City of Lusaka, Ms. Chilando Chitangala, alongside government officials, partners, couriers, motor drivers and members of the press.

The project, in partnership with X-Energi, combines electric mobility with localized renewable energy solutions that complement the existing power grid. Solar panels support battery infrastructure, easing pressure on the grid during peak demand while ensuring drivers and couriers can continue operating even during power interruptions. This approach reduces operating costs and improves income stability for couriers and delivery partners using the platform.

The project is designed as a scalable model, starting with 150 motorbikes and expanding over time to about 1500 by the end of the year to support broader clean energy and mobility services across Zambia.By lowering barriers to entry, the program promotes economic inclusion and opens opportunities for more Zambians to participate in the growing delivery and logistics economy.

In his keynote address, The Minister of Green Energy and Environment, Hon. Mike E. Mposha described the initiative as a direct response to Zambia’s sustainability commitments:

“This event marks a pivotal moment in our transport sector’s transition toward cleaner energy, directly supporting the government’s vision for a robust green economy. By introducing these electric assets into the courier and delivery ecosystem, we are taking a tangible step toward decarbonizing the transport sector.”

He further emphasized that the project aligns with Zambia’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and supports Strategic Development Area 3 of the Eighth National Development Plan, which prioritizes environmental sustainability. The Minister also highlighted ongoing collaboration between Yango and the Lusaka City Council to expand supporting infrastructure, noting that discussions are underway to establish a comprehensive network of solar-powered charging stations across the city, an effort welcomed by the Mayor’s office as Lusaka works toward cleaner, smarter urban systems.

Speaking at the partnership signing and launch, Country Head for Yango Zambia, Kabanda Chewe said, “This initiative reflects our commitment to practical sustainability solutions that work for cities, its residents and visitors, and the environment. By combining electric mobility with solar-supported infrastructure, we are helping reduce emissions while creating more reliable and affordable earning opportunities for courier and driver partners.”

The initiative aligns with Zambia’s Eighth National Development Plan and the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement, reinforcing Yango’s role in supporting climate-conscious innovation and inclusive economic development. Partner riders and stakeholders are encouraged to engage with the program as it scales toward a cleaner, more resilient urban mobility ecosystem.
