RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Electric bikes and scooters are becoming the go-to rides for kids. But with their growing popularity also comes the increased risk of injuries.

Jorge Montano, a Pediatric Injury Prevention Specialist at Renown Children’s Hospital, says staff are seeing firsthand how severe those injuries can be.

“We have a unique perspective. Renown Children’s Hospital being the only Level II trauma center for pediatrics. We really get to see the majority of the major injuries that are happening in these kiddos. And with that we really noted an average age between 10 to about 13 years old of those most severe injuries that we’re treating; specifically, fractures and traumatic brain injuries is what we’ve been seeing,” said Montano.

Health care professionals are stressing to the community and families that education is key. Starting with knowing which of the 3 categories your child’s bike or scooter falls under and ensuring you have the proper safety gear.

“Really become aware of what you are riding, what your child is riding, how fast they are going. What is the equipment that they are utilizing to ensure that whatever speed that they are travelling on or to, that the equipment matches to be able to protect them in case something does happen.” said Montano.

Also, remember that visibility matters.

“I think the biggest concern is gonna be, be visible, be a defensive rider and ensure that you stay within the recommended areas, such as bike lanes and bike paths,” said Montano.

Montano added that everyone needs to focus on making sure they are aware of the risks before the ride begins.
