Chinese Brand Uses Dozens Of Fluffy Cats To Prove A Point

Omoda introduced itself to the UK with an odd campaign.

The launch featured cats, flowers, snow, and rain.

New Omoda 7 is offered in plug-in hybrid and ICE guises.

The Omoda name may not immediately register, but the Chery-owned brand has been quietly expanding across several Western markets and now wants attention with its latest SUV, the Omoda 7. For its UK arrival, it has opted for a marketing campaign that features cats, flowers, snow, and rain.

Positioned between the Omoda 5 and Omoda 9, the 7 made its dynamic debut in the UK earlier this month at London Fashion Week. Its marketing campaign revolved around the theme of ‘I’m Not a Supermodel, But This Car Is,’ using model Denise Ohnona, best known as a doppelganger of Kate Moss.

It’s a rather odd way to promote the new SUV, particularly when Omoda appears intent on highlighting the 7’s design. A fleet of cars was also used to shuttle designers and models across London throughout the week.

The Chinese brand has also started promoting some of the 7’s features in an unusual way. To show off the SUV’s noise-reducing glass, Omoda enlisted dozens of fluffy cats to clamber all over it, purring enthusiastically on the outside while remaining blissfully inaudible from behind the wheel. It is undeniably cute. It is also worth noting that you do not need specialist glass to silence a cat’s purr. Standard automotive glass would cope just fine.

To promote the 7’s three interior fragrance options, Omoda dumped thousands of brightly colored flowers over it, possibly the remaining stock from a post-Valentine’s Day clearout. Snow and rain were then sprayed across the Omoda 7 as it sat on a rolling road, all in an effort to demonstrate what its hybrid powertrain can supposedly handle.

What Drives The Omoda 7?

Beyond the feline theatrics and floral confetti, the Omoda 7 itself is fairly conventional. Power comes from a plug-in hybrid system that pairs a 1.5-liter engine with an 18.3 kWh battery, good for a combined 201 hp and 269 lb-ft (365 Nm) of torque.

Although it takes a leisurely 8.4 seconds to hit 62 mph (100 km/h), it can travel over 700 miles (1,126 km) between stops. A more traditional ICE-only version with a 1.6-liter engine rated at 145 hp and 203 lb-ft (275 Nm) will also be offered.

Key interior features include a 15.6-inch central infotainment display and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Prices for the regular petrol model start at £29,915 ($40,600), while the PHEV will start at £32,000 ($43,400).
