Some US municipalities opted for a tractor trailer garbage truck. And not I don't mean one that just heads back and forth from the transfer station to the dump, but actually does the pick up route. These used low-floor cabovers like Crane Carriers and Autocar WXLLs that almost never came with a fifth-wheel, and they would attach the side-loader directly to the tactor instead of the trailer.
