Just before 8:45 p.m. on Feb. 6, a boy called 911 to report that his e-bike had been taken at gunpoint by two suspects in the area of Greenfield and Elliot roads.

“He stole my stole my bike,” he told the dispatcher through tears. “I worked so hard for that.”

The dispatcher told the boy to take a deep breath and assured him that help was on the way.

Within minutes, Gilbert police officers arrived in the area and spotted the suspect, Keys, based on the description provided by the child victim. Dashcam video shows the stolen bike coming towards the patrol vehicle, as an officer gets out to confront the suspect.

“Get down now! Get down and off the bike,” the officer yells to Keys at gunpoint before taking him to the ground and handcuffing him. “Where’s the gun?”

Video from a body-worn camera then shows the officer holding the firearm he reportedly seized from Keys, which police identified as a .22 caliber handgun.

Keys was soon booked into the Maricopa County jail on multiple charges, including armed robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, misconduct involving weapons and underage possession of liquor.

The second suspect was able to get away, but was later identified as a 14-year-old boy. He was arrested on Feb. 17 and booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Center for armed robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and unlawful flight from law enforcement.
