Key PointsWorld’s first diesel PHEV ute with 47% thermal efficiency1000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacityProduction model arriving Q4 2026, petrol PHEV in 2027
Chery has revealed its KP31 ute concept at a Sydney event, showcasing the world’s first diesel PHEV system in a dual-cab ute.
The concept previews a production model due in Q4 2026. It will compete directly with the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV in Australia’s growing PHEV ute segment.
World-First Diesel PHEV Powertrain
The KP31 uses a 2.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine paired with an electric motor. Chery claims 47% thermal efficiency, making it one of the most efficient powertrains in any production vehicle.
The diesel PHEV system is 10% more fuel efficient than equivalent petrol PHEV setups. Chery has also addressed traditional diesel drawbacks with improved NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) characteristics.
The system delivers 1000kg payload capacity and 3.5-tonne towing capacity, matching key competitors in the segment.

Taking on the Competition
The KP31 will compete in Australia’s emerging PHEV ute market. The BYD Shark 6 launched in late 2025 and has gained strong early sales momentum. GWM’s Cannon Alpha PHEV offers a more traditional approach with higher towing capacity.
Chery’s diesel PHEV system aims to differentiate through efficiency and capability. The 1000kg payload matches work ute requirements, while 3.5-tonne towing exceeds the Shark 6’s 2.5-tonne limit.

Design and Dimensions
The KP31 concept features aggressive styling with a prominent grille, LED lighting, and muscular wheel arches. A snorkel and all-terrain tyres signal off-road capability.
Chery Australia’s Lucas Harris said the concept demonstrates the brand’s commitment to the Australian market. “This is a ute designed for Australian conditions, with the payload and towing capacity our customers need,” Harris said.

The tub features a rack system and integrated tie-down points. Chery has not released detailed dimensions, but the concept appears similar in size to mid-size competitors.
KP31 is the concept designation only. Chery will announce the production name closer to launch.
Future Plans
The diesel PHEV model will arrive in Q4 2026. Chery plans to follow with a petrol PHEV variant in 2027, giving buyers choice between the two powertrain options.
Pricing has not been announced. The BYD Shark 6 starts at $57,900, while the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV begins at $69,990. Chery is expected to position the KP31 competitively within this range.
The KP31 concept signals Chery’s serious intent in the Australian ute market. With its world-first diesel PHEV system and competitive specifications, it could challenge the early dominance of BYD in the PHEV ute segment.
