MG Motor India has started testing a brand-new SUV in India. This is the first all-new locally manufactured model from the company after the launch of the MG Windsor in September 2024.
Codenamed ‘MG 520’, the upcoming SUV will sit above the MG Hector in the lineup. It will be offered with both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and pure electric (EV) powertrains.
The official name for India is not confirmed yet. For now, it is being referred to as the MG Starlight 560.
Based On Wuling Starlight 560
The new MG SUV is a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560 sold in global markets.
Spy images suggest that the test vehicle seen in India is the plug-in hybrid variant. The large functional grille with honeycomb inserts at the front is a key sign of a partially electric powertrain. The rectangular headlamp design also matches the international model.
Globally, the Starlight 560 is available in both 5-seat and 7-seat versions. MG may introduce both options in India as well.

Expected Features
The upcoming SUV is likely to come loaded with premium features. It could get full-LED headlamps and tail lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.
Inside, buyers can expect electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera system and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). More comfort and safety features are also expected.
Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain Details
Internationally, the plug-in hybrid version combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Both send power to the front wheels.
The petrol engine produces 105 hp and 130 Nm of torque. The electric motor generates 194 hp and 230 Nm of torque. A 20.5 kWh LFP battery pack powers the system and offers an EV-only range of up to 125 km (CLTC).
The plug-in hybrid version has a claimed top speed of 170 km/h.
Pure Electric Variant
The pure electric version uses a front-mounted electric motor that produces 134 hp and 200 Nm of torque.
It is powered by a 56.7 kWh LFP battery pack, delivering a claimed range of up to 500 km (CLTC). The top speed is rated at 160 km/h.
For India, MG is likely to offer a more powerful motor and possibly a larger battery pack to make it more competitive.
