What is it? GWM’s Tank 500 Ultra PHEV is a large SUV/off-roader clearly modelled on the Toyota LandCruiser but powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Tank is a pejorative term for a big, ugly 4WD; it’s unclear whether this Chinese company is trying to reclaim the word or is simply being upfront.
What does it cost? The 500 Ultra is the range topper, priced at $80,000 drive away, with every bell and whistle available from GWM (formerly Great Wall Motors).
