BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn is calling for a blanket ban on delivery drivers operating e-bikes and mopeds.

Copley Square is one of several hubs where delivery app drivers on mopeds and e-bikes can be seen stopping, parking in the bike lane, and picking up orders. It’s something that residents in the area have noticed.

“They take up all the spots when you come to park; you can’t park. They run into people’s cars,” one woman said.

Flynn’s proposal for a blanket ban would prevent what some deem as a nuisance, but not everyone agrees with the ban.

“To be honest with you, I don’t think there should be a ban,” one person stated.

Flynn also wants riders to register their e-bikes and mopeds with the state and require driver’s licenses for those that go above 30 Miles per hour.

Some residents are leery about the implementation of the ban, stating, “a blanket wide ban doesn’t make too much sense” but agree that the bikes with electric motors can be annoying.

Under the proposal, e-bikes would be required to have proper lights, signals and follow the same traffic requirements as mopeds and motorcycles. This comes a month after a new city ordinance took effect, requiring delivery app companies to obtain a permit to operate in the city.
