Pros: It’s practically the quintessential compact hybrid SUV, with good reason—the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid just works so well for so many drivers. The spacious cabin provides ample cargo capacity, as the interior layout proves practical and foolproof. Crash test scores are strong, and Toyota includes many standard driver assists and active safety features. Factor in zippy acceleration and great fuel economy, and it’s no surprise that the RAV4 Hybrid is so popular.
Cons: Pragmatic as it may be, the RAV4 Hybrid isn’t very exciting. Its engine can be loud and gritty, the brakes should be stronger, and the steering feels numb. Nor is the suspension very settled, sometimes delivering a choppy ride. Although the included driver assist features are useful, they could be better executed, especially the lane keep system.
